In 1845 former Governor John Motley Morehead addressed the members of the North Carolina General Assembly to argue in support of the North Carolina Railroad. As Governor he knew well the troubles facing his beloved state. He traveled throughout the state, to cities and countryside, arguing passionately for the creation of an east to west railroad or "Tree of Life" that would greatly improve the lives of North Carolinians.

" Let the North Carolina Railroad like a huge tree, strike its roots deeply into the shore of the Atlantic, and be moistened by it waters, and at last stretch its noble trunk though the center of the State, and extend its overshadowing and protecting branches through the valleys and along the mountain tops of the west, until it becomes indeed, the Tree of Life to North Carolina."
Governor John Motley Morehead, 1845
