North Carolina Business Directory, 1869

"Hurrah for the North Carolina Railroad! No more will [they] have to spend two days tugging through the mud and over hills to visit our Capital; no more will our farmers have to endure the toil and exposure of wagoning and expend all of their profits in getting their produce to market. The Iron Horse is now at their service, and time and space are almost annihilated. A brighter day, we trust is dawning on us."
Hillsborough Recorder, April 14, 1855

Atlantic and the North Carolina Railroad

Early progress of the NCRR encouraged the General Assembly to incorporate the A & NCRR and the Western North Carolina Railroad.
John Motley Morehead became the first president of the A&NC. Morehead was the owner of Shepherd’s Point Land Company and had purchased land on the point and developed it into Morehead City, the terminus of the A&NC.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 16, 1855 and the first train traveled the length of the road from Goldsboro to Morehead City.
