Rail
Partners
Norfolk
Southern
Is
NCRRs most significant railroad partner, paying annual trackage
fees of approximately $11 million. Norfolk Southern is responsible for
operating and maintaining NCRRs chief asset. The agreement includes
a number of property management, coordination and risk management provisions
and is effective until 2014 (renewable).
CSX
Is
a freight railroad that uses the NCRR corridor between Raleigh and Cary,
and connects the NCRR line at Charlotte, Lexington, Durham, Cary and Goldsboro.
NCRR and CSX share an interest in moving freight for North Carolina companies
safely and efficiently through key parts of the state.
NCDOT
In
a partnership that is unique nationwide, NCRR and DOT work together to
improve the quality of crossings, bridges and other facilities along the
corridor. An improvement campaign of approximately $10 million was just
completed in the eastern part of the state. Another joint effort, this
time to improve passenger service, is planned for the corridor between
Selma and Charlotte.
Operation
Lifesaver
This
non-profit organization, whose state headquarters are located in Norfolk
Southern offices in Raleigh, NC, is focused exclusively on improving public
safety at railroad crossings. Educational programs such as trainmaster
courses, instruction for emergency rescue personnel, educational programs
for school children and train rides for key community personnel are all
a part of the Operation Lifesaver approach. NCRR is pursuing ways to support
and partner with this organization as train safety issues become ever
more important to everyone.
Amtrak
Amtrak currently operates all passenger service in North Carolina,
including Charlotte to Raleigh, under agreement with NCDOT and Norfolk
Southern. NCRR and Amtrak share a unique interest in exploring ways to
improve rail travel. Amtrak owns its rail lines in the northeastern U.S.,
but operates on host railroads elsewhere in the country.
