February 21, 2007

On February 28, 2007, the North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR) will present the revised alternative routes being considered for its study of the feasibility of relocating the existing railroad line between the Port of Morehead City and Havelock. The alternatives to be presented were revised in response to public comments received at the two previous public meetings held on November 29 and 30, 2006, Combined, nearly 100 citizens attended the two events.

The alternatives to be presented on February 28, 2007 will include two new routes, changes in the alignments of routes previously shown, and an “improve existing” alternative which evaluates possible improvements within the existing rail corridor. Some previously considered alternatives were eliminated from further consideration.

The purpose of the feasibility study is to determine the potential benefits, as well as the environmental impacts and costs associated with relocating the railroad. Additionally, the study will address the economic development potential of a new rail line.

Illustrations of the alternatives will be made available to the press on February 28, 2007, upon request. To learn more about the NCRR Relocation Study, contact Leza Mundt, AICP of Earth Tech at 919.854.7551 or by email at leza.mundt@earthtech.com.
