Double Track and Railroad Signaling Upgrades Begin Between Raleigh            and Goldsboro on the North Carolina Railroad

(Raleigh, NC)--The North Carolina Railroad Company has announced that it is starting work on an $18 million capital improvement project on the NCRR corridor between Raleigh and Goldsboro to upgrade the rail line for improved service.  In order to increase capacity, three passing tracks totaling six miles will be constructed and a Centralized Traffic Control system will be installed. The project will upgrade this portion of the railroad closer to the standard that exists between Raleigh and Charlotte, will improve the performance and reliability of railroad operations, and will accommodate increased traffic on the railroad.  Norfolk Southern Railway will oversee construction on the projects, which are scheduled to begin this fall.  The improvements are funded with the NCRR’s lease revenues.  The project was approved by the NCRR Board of Directors in 2003.

The first phase of the project includes the construction of two new main passing tracks in the Auburn and Powatan areas of western Johnston County.  East of Selma, two new yard tracks and a main passing siding track will be constructed.  The existing NCRR yard and siding tracks will be upgraded and extended, allowing trains to pass more freely.  Modern rail traffic control signaling will be installed between Raleigh and Pine Level and the sidings will be connected to the main track by high speed electronic controlled switches.  Amtrak operates all passenger trains along the segment between Raleigh and Selma under agreements with NCDOT, Norfolk Southern operates freight trains and the line crosses the CSXT freight north-south mainline.  The work will build on a joint NCRR-NCDOT capital project completed on this segment of the line in 2001 that resulted in a speed increase from 49 mph to 59 mph.

“NCRR is committed to making rail improvements that will increase capacity, safety, speed and reliability for both freight and passenger trains,” says Scott Saylor, NCRR President.  “As pressure on the state’s highways increase, and demand for more freight shipping continues, rail transportation serves as a critical part of the state’s economic development.  Current trends indicate that there will be an ever-increasing demand for rail service in the coming decades.  The railroad has many areas that need upgrading and modernization so we must choose projects with the greatest cost benefit and that promote economic development and the high quality of life that North Carolina offers.”

The North Carolina Railroad Company owns and manages the 317-mile rail corridor from Morehead City to Charlotte that serves as the backbone of the state’s rail system.  The railroad carries more than 60 freight trains operated by Norfolk Southern and eight Amtrak passenger trains daily.  NCRR’s stock is owned by the State of North Carolina and it is operated as a private company.  The NCRR’s mission is to manage, improve and protect the state’s rail properties and corridors in a manner that will enhance freight and passenger service and promote economic development.
