Sam Hunt Steps Down as Railroad Chairman, Will Continue as Board Member

Raleigh--Sam Hunt is resigning as Chairman of the Board of the North Carolina Railroad Company, but will remain on the Board as a Director. Hunt, who is a former State Legislator and Secretary of Transportation, has served as President and Chairman of the NCRR since 1996. Brad Wilson, Senior Vice President of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, and currently Vice Chairman of NCRR, has succeeded Hunt as Chairman. Bill Kincheloe, a Director since 1987, has been elected Vice Chairman. Scott Saylor, who has been President since 2000, will continue in that role.

“My involvement with the NCRR has been a very rewarding experience and I have appreciated the opportunity to lead this unique and important organization,” Hunt says. “Now its time for new leadership and we couldn’t have selected a better Chairman than Brad Wilson.”

“Sam Hunt took over as Chairman of the Board at a troubled time when there were many controversial decisions regarding North Carolina’s future with rail,” says Governor Mike Easley. “Sam is at his best when he faces difficult challenges. Consistent with his entire career in public service, he answered his state’s call and succeeded in his mission. I am pleased that he has agreed to stay on the board and I know he will be a valuable resource to our new leadership team.”

“I am honored to be elected Chairman,” Wilson says. “Even though this is the State’s oldest corporation, our focus will continue to be on the future as we work with the Governor, the General Assembly and others to be active participants in North Carolina’s increasingly important rail industry.”

The North Carolina Railroad Company owns and manages the 317-mile rail corridor from Morehead City to Charlotte that serves as the backbone of the state’s rail system. The railroad carries more than 60 freight trains operated by Norfolk Southern and eight Amtrak passenger trains daily. The NCRR’s mission is to manage, improve and protect the State’s rail properties and corridors in a manner that will enhance freight and passenger service and promote economic development.
