
FREIGHT
Is NCRR's most significant railroad partner. Norfolk Southern is responsible
for operating and maintaining NCRR's chief asset, under a long term agreement with NCRR.
Is a freight railroad that uses the NCRR corridor between Raleigh and
Cary, and connects the NCRR line at Charlotte, Lexington, Durham, Cary
and Goldsboro. NCRR and CSX share an interest in moving freight for
North Carolina companies safely and efficiently through key parts of
the state.

PASSENGER
Amtrak currently operates all passenger service in North Carolina,
including Charlotte to Raleigh, under agreement with NCDOT and Norfolk
Southern. NCRR and Amtrak share a unique interest in exploring ways
to improve rail travel. Amtrak owns its rail lines in the northeastern
U.S., but operates on "host" railroads elsewhere in the country.

GENERAL

NCDOT - In a partnership that is unique nationwide, NCRR and DOT work together
to improve the quality of crossings, bridges and other facilities along
the corridor. An improvement campaign of approximately $10 million
was just completed in the eastern part of the state. Another joint
effort, this time to improve passenger service, is planned for the
corridor between Selma and Charlotte.

This non-profit organization, whose state headquarters are located
in Norfolk Southern offices in Raleigh, NC, is focused exclusively
on improving public safety at railroad crossings. Educational programs
such as trainmaster courses, instruction for emergency rescue personnel,
educational programs for school children and train rides for key community
personnel are all a part of the Operation Lifesaver approach. NCRR
is pursuing ways to support and partner with this organization as train
safety issues become ever more important to everyone.
