Progress in Motion Best Rail Sites in NC Activity Economic Development Local Allies, One of the fastest growing trends in the site selection business is the demand for “project ready” industrial sites. The availability of quality industrial sites—particularly rail-served industrial sites in North Carolina—continues to be an issue that impacts the economic success in many communities around the country. Recognizing this trend and this need, the North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR) is conducting a survey in the identification, development, and preservation of quality rail-served sites. As such, NCRR is sponsoring a Best Rail Sites Activity for North Carolina. With this activity NCRR will identify and showcase some of the best rail-served sites in North Carolina at their May 2010 Progress in Motion forum, in order to evaluate the subject statewide. To assist with this endeavor, NCRR has retained McCallum Sweeney Consulting (MSC), a site selection consulting firm based in Greenville, South Carolina. MSC has developed the site criteria and the request for information (both of which are attached), and they will also be evaluating the sites. In addition, MSC will determine which of the submitted sites are the “best” rail-served sites in North Carolina. MSC will be participating in the 2010 Rail Forum (visit www.ncrr.com for more information) and will announce the top sites of this competition during a special event on May 10th at the Raleigh Depot. All of us here at the NCRR are very excited about this activity, but we need your help to make it successful! We are asking you, as local economic developers, to help us compile the best rail sites in North Carolina. We have attached three documents—an overview, a description of minimum criteria, and a questionnaire. Please take a minute to review the attachments, and then get started on your application! Full applications are due to McCallum Sweeney Consulting no later than Wednesday, March 10th. Please note—this is NOT a live project. However, we hope this exercise will provide positive recognition for your sites and hopefully better position the entire state for some real projects in the future. We look forward to hearing from you soon, and please consider attending the upcoming Rail Forum. Regards,
Richard Wiley
