About NCRR

North Carolina Railroad Company is a Real Estate Investment Trust whose voting stock is controlled by the State of North Carolina. NCRR owns and manages the rail line and other properties between Charlotte, North Carolina and the Morehead City Port Terminal on the Atlantic coast.

Built more than 150 years ago, this 317-mile corridor opened up the state to settlement and growth. See Then and Now to read NCRR’s colorful history. Today, freight trains operated by Norfolk Southern carry products in and out of the state. Amtrak runs two passenger trains, the Piedmont and the Carolinian, along its corridor. There are plans for regional mass transit operations along NCRR’s rails in Charlotte, the Triad and the Triangle.

High-speed rail transit is under consideration from the busy northeast corridor of the country to the booming southern metro regions of Charlotte and Atlanta. Although the NCRR corridor has great potential to increase freight and passenger transit efficiency, much work needs to be done. Recently, $10 million worth of projects to improve the eastern part of the corridor were completed. Plans are underway for over $50 million worth of improvements to the portion between Raleigh and Charlotte, but hundreds of millions will be needed to maximize the investments along the railroad in ways that will benefit the people of North Carolina. Visit the Corridor Improvements page for more information about current and future projects.
